Geocache Description:

A cache and dash.

Cuba Lake is actually a man-made lake, or reservoir. It was built in 1858 at a cost of $150,000 to serve as a feeder reservoir for the Genesee Valley Canal system that ran south from Rochester, New York to Cuba, and then west to Olean. Cuba is the highest elevation on the canal line and thus the perfect location for the reservoir. The lake itself is at 1,545 feet above sea level. At the time the lake was built, it was the largest man made lake ever built.

Cuba Lake has long been a well-known recreational destination. In the 1950’s and 1960’s it was known regionally for it’s dance hall on the lake called “The Pavilion.” People fondly remember the floor flexing as the crowd danced! A carousel with hand carved animals that was located at the lake for many years is now in the New York State Museum in Albany. The lake is particularly popular with sailors and windsurfers.

The cache is a simple cache and dash located near (but not on) the dam and should be a quick find. Park at the dam parking area, and be alert for the many muggles that populate the area! The cache is a medium size geocaching approved plastic container with a clear lid. I have stocked it with collectible, uncirculated presidential dollars, small compasses, and other good stuff. Try to avoid putting geojunk in the cache!
