This local hotspot for tourist from all over. South of Buhl, 16 miles off Highway 30 in the Salmon Falls Creek Canyon. The cords will put you at the picnic area at the base of Balanced Rock. The locals have called it the 8th Wonder of the World!
Over 48 feet tall, the rock balances on a pedestal 3 feet by 17 inches and weighs 40 tons. Visitors are amazed that this monolith formation has not toppled from its stand.
A monolith is a geological feature such as a mountain, consisting of a single massive stone or rock, or a single piece of rock placed as, or within, a monument. Erosion usually exposes the geological formations, which are most often made of very hard and solid metamorphic rock.
To log this cache you will need to email us with answers to the following questions...
1. What type of monolith is Balanced Rock?
2. What type of weathering shaped the rock?
The last two summers we have had wildfires in the area. If you plan on hiking up to Balanced Rock please tread lightly.
In warmer months snakes do like to warm themselves in the rocks. Be careful.
