Turtle, Turtle, TURTLE!!! Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Scamp: Thank you to everyone who has shared this special place with us over the past several months.

My fiance and I (with Penny in tow) are relocating to Washington state at the end of this week. Because of the environmental sensitivity of this wetland area, I removed the cache this afternoon and archived it. When I placed the cache in this park, it was only because I could check on it constantly and assure myself that visitors had not negatively impacted the habitat of the animals that live near the cache site. Since I will no longer be able to actively monitor the cache, I decided that it would be best to archive it.

I really loved reading all of your logs, and I hope that you enjoyed the cache as much as Penny and I did.

Geocache Description:

Located along a short nature trail. The trail is mostly along boardwalks, but a few short stretches are not and can sometimes be muddy or slightly overgrown. Use your skeeter repellent in warm weather! Trail hours are 8AM until sunset.

Parking is available at N41 47.146' W086 44.747'. Do not attempt to approach this cache from other directions, as the park is bordered by private property on two sides and a railway on the other.

Penny's Turtle, Turtle, TURTLE!!! Cache

My little geodog, Penny, loves to stand on the bridge and bark at the turtles and frogs in the pond that is at the heart of this tiny pocket of woods in New Buffalo. Her barks always begin quietly, then escalate to determined declaration-- a "bark, bark, BARK!!!" that I think actually means "turtle, turtle, TURTLE!!!" And who wouldn't get excited? Turtles are nifty.

The cache is a good sized tupperware container that should have plenty of room for trade items. It is hidden very near the trail, so little to no tromping in the brush should be required. Many tiny critters, including our friends the frogs and turtles, live all around this area, so be careful to watch where you step. Some of the turtles in this part of the state belong to protected species; if you see any of our reptile friends, please do not disturb them. If you run into trash, please help out by practicing CITO; these are sensitive animals and can easily be harmed by contaminated water.

Click here if you'd like to read more about the species of turtles (and other wildlife) that you may encounter in the wetlands of Michigan.

Please conceal the container as well or better than you found it.

Original Cache Contents: * Log Book and Pen * A $5 gift card to a sandwich shop, in case someone is hungry. * A compass. * A deck of Hawai'i playing cards that has traveled the world entertaining me with in-flight solitaire. *An evil rubber duckie. * A teddy bear. * A Susan B. Anthony silver dollar. * A groovy mood ring. * A beaded coin purse. * An harmonica. * A few matchbox cars. * A collapsible water bowl for geodogs. ... and probably some other stuff that I have now forgotten.

Happy caching!
