They Came In Peace Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

NooYawka: The traffic light where this cache was hidden has been claimed by the ongoing construction in this area. That's the 3rd time this has happened, so sadly, I think I need to archive the listing. I'll resurrect it once the construction here is finished, or earlier if I can find another suitable location. My thanks to all the cachers who found it and wrote so many meaningful things in their logs. Semper Fi!!

Geocache Description:

This cache is placed in honor of the members of the U.S. Armed Forces who served in Beiruit, Lebanon from 1982-1984, especially the 241, mostly Marines, who died on Oct. 23, 1983. My husband was among those who were there. Fortunately, he came home safely, but many friends of ours didn’t. I hope this cache helps keep their memory alive.

The cache is located at a public monument, on what is technically part of the Quantico Marine Base, although you need not pass through security to access it. Parking is available at N 38° 32.730, W 77° 20.146, or in the commuter lot diagonally across the street. Be careful crossing Rt. 1 if you choose the second option.

The container is a small, clearly marked lock’n’lock, containing various military themed trinkets, including a prize for FTF. You will also find a coin donated by the CO of Military Police Company. It’s in honor of the 2nd MP Battalion at Camp Lejeune, NC which was stood up in 2000, and disbanded 3 years later. This is a trade item only, not a trackable. I’m also releasing the Beiruit Memorial Travel Bug into the world, my first. Please stay at least close to the theme with trade items, although feel free to interpret it broadly.

Special permission to place this cache has been given by base officials, including the Commanding Officer, the Executive Officer of Security Battalion, and the CO of Military Police Company. Please act appropriately for the location when searching for it. Be discreet, but if questioned by anyone, do not lie about what you’re doing, or you may cause suspicion. If needed, there is a copy of the permission letter in the cache. Please rehide well and contact me if you have any suggestions or problems with this cache.

The new National Museum of the Marine Corps is nearby, where you can get the coordinates for From The Halls of Montezuma(GC10A6N)

Semper Fi!!!

OOOOOrah to CliffMc31 for the FTF!!

Update, April 12, 2010: Due to all the construction in the area I've had to turn this cache into a key case micro. It is now located diagonally across Rt. 1 from the original location. Be aware, you'll be searching at a very busy intersection, so use your best stealthiness. There is a small commuter lot at this same corner for you to park in.Once all the reconstruction is finished, I hope to turn this back into a regular sized cache similar to the original.
