Original Lighthouse (1898-1939) Arisaig Lighthouse 2007
Original Lighthouse (1898 - 1939) Arisaig Lighthouse 2007
In 1895, fisherman in and around the Arisaig area decided that a light was needed to aid navigation into the Arisaig wharf at night or in the event of a storm. For three years, this light consisted of a lantern at the top of a high pole. In 1898, this pole was replaced by the original lighthouse (see picture) which stood 40ft above sea level. The lamp was visible for seven miles. One summer night in 1939, while the lamp was being lighted, the light house caught on fire & burned to the ground. New electric range lights were installed after the fire, which remain in use to this day. They serve as the main navigational aid to mariners to and from the Arisaig wharf. In the summer of 2007, the community of Arisaig and surrounding area decided to pay tribute to their ancestors and construct a replica of the original lighthouse in its original location. This is how it stands today.
