View over Wupperthal
This Cache will take you on a short walk with beautiful views over the small town Wupperthal, leading to a viewpoint where you have a great view down onto the Tra-Tra-river.
A little bit of history:
The town dates back to 1830, the name "Wupperthal" derives from the Wupper River in Germany. From the valley of this river, two Rhineland missionaries, Baron Theobold von Wurmb from the town of Barmen and Johann Gottlieb Leipoldt from the town of Elberfeld came to found this mission-station. They named this town Wupperthal nearly 100 years before the town Wuppertal in Germany was founded as a conglomeration of some small towns and villages. One of this small towns were Barmen and Elberfeld, where Leipoldt and von Wurm came from. So they were not only missionarys but also visionairs.
By the way:
Leipoldt was a shoemaker by trade and grandfather of the famous South African poet Louis Leipoldt
The reason why the town in South Africa has a 'h' in the name is, that this grammatic was common in Germay in this age. Around 1901 they 'h' in this context was removed.
I depose an interesting book about Wuppertal in Germany and it’s surrounding in the Lekkerbekkie tea room. You can read in it while drinking a pot of the famous Wupperthal Rooibos Tea…
Attractions in the village include the „Velskoen“ shoe factory established by Leipoldt to create work and still in operation, as well as a Rooibos Tea factory, which is operational during summer months and tobacco is dried and worked into rolls (roltabak). Take a look at the social projekt of Red Cedar, where they produce Rooibos-soap and other body-care-products. The historical church buildings, workshops and school can also be viewed.
The unlike bigger town of Wuppertal in Germany is my home. My intention is to help uplifting my sister-town. One way is to spread it’s name under the geocachers around the world…
