Geocache Description:

Credit/Blame for this event must be shared with nittany dave - he's the one who put this idea in my head!

Welcome one and all to Wilmington’s first Flash Mob Gathering of Geocachers! This event will last only 15 minutes, and you MUST be present and sign the logsheet during that time if you want to claim the event. Sounds easy enough, huh? Oh – we forgot to mention one small detail: this event will take place in the middle of the Cape Fear River.

Yes - even though this attribute is not available for event caches, YOU WILL NEED A BOAT OR SOME OTHER KIND OF RIVER-GOING VESSEL TO ATTEND THIS EVENT!! At no time during this event will you be on dry land. This will be extremely difficult not to mention dangerous! All event-related activities will occur with participants sitting in their kayaks/canoes/rafts made from rubber duckies, etc. So we will be meeting at the coordinates, signing the logsheets, mingling, eating fray-made chocolate truffles (hershey’s kisses are for land-lubbers), and gathering for our picture – all while battling the intense currents of the Cape Fear River and trying not to capsize ourselves and each other.

It will be 15 minutes of splashy good fun!

Please be advised that there are inherent dangers to a gathering of this nature. This part of the river has its fair share of alligators swimming about, and the coordinates are going to put us pretty close to the shipping lane where there are frequent comings and goings of large cargo ships. You should see the waves those boats make. Perhaps you will! Dolphins have been seen in this area and, while entertaining, their antics could easily flip a large kayak. Also, hurricane season will not end until December 1st. If a tropical storm happens to be near the area, they tend to come right up this river as they make their way inland. On top of all of this, we will be in the Cape Fear River, which certainly *sounds* risky enough all on its own. Unquestionably there are other hazards that we are forgetting to mention, but you get the general idea. YOU MOB AT YOUR OWN RISK!!

With that unpleasantness behind us, let’s go over the itinerary:

9:30 – 9:45 Arrive at River Road Park, get your boat to the launch site (end of road).
9:45 – 9:58 Get in the water. Conversation at the launch site is discouraged.
9:59 Paddle feverishly to the listed coordinates.
10:00 I will raise a small pirate flag to indicate the start of the event.
10:01 – 10:08 Approach my kayak for a log sheet. Sign and return this logsheet to me before the end of the event. (This is the part where someone will fall in the river, and it better not be me.) When you turn in your logsheet, I will give you a piece of candy.
10:09 – 10:12 Enjoy your candy. Mingle.
10:13 Gather for a group picture. If you have capsized and are in the water then that is where you will be for the picture. SMILE!
10:14 I will call out a one minute warning. Further mingling is encouraged, but be prepared to leave in mid-sentence when I call the end of the event.
10:15 I will abruptly announce the end of the event. Everybody RACE from the area. I will stay behind to help any folks who are still in the water.

Afterwards, I will begin a guided tour of the nearby island caches. We will start on the western beach of Keg Island, near this cache. Now, doesn’t all of this sound like FUN!?! Who's with me??!

**Please note that the time for this event may change...keep checking here for updates or add this event to your watchlist. I will post updates via note.**
