A fairly quick find in Nellie Hill Preserve. The trails are mowed wide and there's not a lot of elevation change for this one.
Local lore says that many years ago, the isolated mountain way of life existed in a group of people inhabiting the ridges of the Town of Dover in an area referred to as 'Oniontown' which is where this cache is placed. Growing up, we were always warned of this and some locals would even describe the area as "off limits" and not someplace you want to end up or be when your car broke down as the 'Oniontowners' seem to be feared for their lack of tolerance for outsiders.
There are many legends and stories about Oniontown, an area rich in soil where multitudes of Onions used to be grown. Some say that they were squatters on old farm land. When the farms disappeared and the land divided up, the inhabitants continued to live there and isolated themselves, which, queue the 'Dueling Banjos', caused inbreeding amongst the inhabitants because of their isolation.
Today, because of many factors such as urban sprawl and the local real estate boom, many of these people have been thought to have, more or less, 'joined society'. These Oniontown natives are most certainly not the only inhabitants of Oniontown today, and it seems that with the town's growth, it has become near impossible to remain isolated.
