Geocache Description:

This cache will take you to the Isipingo Eco Tourist Centre and Boardwalk.

Mangroves are woody trees or shrubs that grow in combination freshwater/marine habitats forming a Mangrove Habitat or Biome. Mangrove Habitats are ecologically significant in that they form a complete plant/animal community. In these areas the soil is water-logged and affected by the tides. Mangroves typically occur in estuaries and marine shorelines. The roots of mangrove plants stabilize the sand and mud, which aid in stabilising estuarine sediments and preventing the undercutting of riverbanks by flood waters and wave action.
Mangrove Habitats are important spawning and nursery areas for many species of marine fish and marine invertebrates. Mangrove botanical elements provide organic material in the form of leaves and detritus, forming the food base for the complex society of estuarine life. Rotting leaves coated with bacteria make a protein-rich food source for invertebrate animals ranging from nematode worms to shellfish, which in turn provide a food source for juvenile fish.

The Ispingo Island Institute proposed the Idea for a boardwalk through the Insipingo Mangrove Swamp and Estuary in order to make this wonderful natural environment accessible to the general public without impacting on the swamp to negatively. The boardwalk extends over the Mangroves for approximately 650 metres.
