As you'll learn when you visit this cache, Letchworth was
Britain's first Garden City. Its near-neighbour Hitchin, however,
has an equally strong floral history. Pick the right time of year
and you can glory in the sights and scents from the hedgerows and
fields belonging to one of the country's leading rose growers
between the cache site and the nearby garden centre.
The cache itself is a green army decontamination pot, with scary
warnings sandpapered off. It's about 4in x 3in x 2in, so it will
take geocoins and smallish swaps / TBs. It's designed to be
watertight but it can be a bit tricky to shut properly. On initial
placement, it contained the following:
- Logbook and pencil, stash card (obviously)
- 'First to Find' badge
- 'FOUND IT' magnet
- Four FA Cup Winners tokens
- One Harry Potter trading card
- Two small karabiners
The location is accessible to wheelchairs and pushchairs, but
there is no obvious nearby parking (unless you should happen to
have business at the garden centre). A cache-n-dash is not
a safe option because of traffic.
One possibility is parking on the residential fringes of Hitchin
or Letchworth - no more than 10 minutes walk on pavements. It's
uphill all the way from Hitchin, though.
