Geocache Description:

Rosario School first opened its doors in the spring of 1891. Originally, the building was two rooms wide and two stories high. The upper story was intended for use as a lodge meeting room and community center, but was never used for those purposes. The second story was removed in 1908 after parents expressed fear that high winds would blow the school over. Classes were held until 1957 when Rosario consolidated with Anacortes and Fildago School districts.

Deeded to Skagit County Historical Society in 1970, the Rosario School remains as an excellent example of a turn- of- the- century one room schoolhouse. Alumni, volunteers, and service clubs, and other community organizations help support the restoration and educational use of this Skagit County landmark.

Each May, students from Anacortes step backward in time to dress up in early-1900’s vintage clothes, play turn-of-the century games, and eat their lunches in pails or baskets. The annual “Old-Fashioned School Day” is sponsored by the Historical Society.

Due to the historical significance of the building and grounds please do not disturb anything close to the buildings. It took a lot of convincing to get permission to place this cache. Please practice the Cacher’s Creed by minimizing your impact on the environment.
