*gln: ARCHIVING ABANDONED CACHE

Greetings thunder_monk,

Looks like our timing is off and It’s time to say goodbye to this cache.

Since I haven't any maintenance here in a very long time, I am going to assume that your priorities have changed and you’ve gone in a different direction.

Archiving due to lack of maintenance is permanent.
CACHE ARCHIVAL IS PERMANENT.

Let me know if I can be of assistance in the future.

Thanks a MILLION for all you have done, Glenn

Geocache Description:

Get Your Kicks On Route 66
Enjoy your drive down the Mother Road.

The intent of this series is to point out historic or unique places along old route 66 between IL and CA. It is NOT meant to be a power trail as caches may be 50 miles or more apart. Stop and enjoy these sights along the way.

*****Log Replaced and container placed inside a platic bag....Please try to remove and replace this one without making holes in the bag and make sure that it is NOT visible to muggles by leaving the bag sticking out of it's hiding spot******

This cache highlights one of the "icons" of RT 66. The Totem Pole Trading Post was built in 1936 and has lived through through 3 moves to different locations due to the highway changing places over the years. The Totem Pole offered many Ozark crafts and trinkets to travellers and lured them in with fancy signs and even fancier promises. The present day Totem Pole offers no less.
From the cache location you can see not only the Totem Pole (in it's present location) but also Rt66 in two of it's locations. You can also take a ride on 66 by following the road in front of the Totem Pole to the city of Doolittle. This section of Rt 66 still contains if you look closely the original "curbs" added to the road to keep people on the road but sometimes succeeded in flipping cars over.
The cache is a magnetic key holder containing only a log sheet. Please be sure to bring a pencil or pen with you. The cache is in a small park in Rolla that has picnic tables, a shelter and a playground featuring "dinosaurs" for the kids to play on.
The park reminds me of the spirit that made Rt 66 great by providing a "themed" area to stop and browse. Many spots along the highway contained roadside attractions to catch the eye and get you to pull over. While this park is not as flamboyuant I believe it continues the tradition.
I hope you enjoy this and the other RT 66 caches and have fun travelling down the "Mother Road"
