Gifkom View Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

tomtwogates: Sadly I have taken this cache out of the system.

The reason is that the Park's authorities do not want any geocaches in the Park, which I think is a very short-sighted policy as all of the caches that I have done in the park and indeed this one was close enough to the paths, etc. so as not to compromise the fynbos.

Thanks for all the great logs that were logged on this cache of mine!

Geocache Description:

Good views over the Atlantic coast at Cape Point

The cache is in the Cape Point section of the Table Mountain National Park and then off the main tourist route to introduce you to one of the gems along the Atlantic coast.

There is an entrance fee payable at the gate. Travel in the direction of the Point. You are looking for the third turn off to the right to Gifkommetjie, which can also be reached from the Circular Drive (second turn off right).

The derivation of the name Gifkommetjie is not clear – translates to poisonous bowl or basin, which is said to be due to a poisonous plant growing in the area, but this has been disproved by the doyen of hiking maps and books Peter Slingsby, who in an article says that they visited the area with a prominent botanist who chewed up everything he could find with no ill effects, but does not recommend that you try it!

From the parking area take the path on the right towards the view point and follow the path from there, there is no need to go off the path into the bush.

The cache can be done as a “there and back”, but if you have the time I recommend that you carry on along the path and complete the circular route (about 5.5km). Spectacular views from all long the ridge and then you drop down to Hoek van Bobbejaan. Here the remains of the 45m trawler Phyllisia wrecked in 1968 can be found as well as one of two massive logs which were washed overboard from a transport ship and created a major hazard to shipping while they were still at sea. An amazing amount of plastic, timber and rope is washed up along this pristine coastline.

From there you walk back along the coast and find the path back up to the parking area at S34 19.341 E18 25.191.
