Geocache Description:

What the heck is a drumlin???

The coordinates listed above will take you to a rather large drumlin. Drumlins are streamlined hills that were formed by the glaciers. There are many theories on how exactly drumlins were formed. One theory is that drumlins are piles of glacial sediment and debris that was dropped by the ice as it moved during the last ice age. Drumlins are always arranged parallel to the direction of ice movement. Drumlins have a distinct shape of an inverted spoon. The Stoss end is the steeper slope and the Lee end is the more gradual slope. The Stoss slope always faces the direction of glacial retreat.

To log this cache, you must do the following:

1. Go to the above listed coordinates. They will take you to the east shoulder of New York State Route 38 between Moravia and Locke, next to the drumlin. You can’t miss it. Take a picture of you with your GPS in front of the drumlin and post it in your “found it” log. DO NOT CROSS THE DITCH BETWEEN THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD AND THE DRUMLIN!! WHILE THE ROAD AND THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD IS PUBLIC LAND, THE DRUMLIN IS NOT!!!! DO NOT TRESPASS ON PRIVATE PROPERTY!!!

2. Enter your coordinates of your location where the picture was taken in your “found it” log.

In an email to shades_of_gray@verizon.net, answer the following questions:

1. Tell us which direction the Stoss side of this drumlin faces.

2. How many years ago was the area in which you are standing under a glacier?

3. Name at least three (3) other features of the geography or topography of the Central New York/Finger Lakes Region that were created by the glaciers. Hint: The features we’re looking for are measured in miles, not feet.

Due to the fact that you need to be out on the shoulder of a road, you might want to consider leaving the kids at home or in the car for this one. Please be careful, and enjoy.

Here’s for hoping that you learned something new today!
