Cache is a 1 qt. cammoed snapware box, located a short distance from the historic Sandy Spring, namesake for Sandy Spring, Maryland.
The cache is located in a patch of woods about 90 yards southwest of the historic Sandy Spring, the original water source for the town of Sandy Spring, Maryland. The spring has been preserved as open space, amidst woods and open fields. You can actually drive up to the spring, at least in good weather, but it is more pleasant to enjoy the walk in the countryside. You can park either at the Sandy Spring Friends Meeting House (also historic) and walk about half a mile to the spring, or park in the field just after the road becomes dirt and walk 0.3 mile to the spring. A longer route to the spring is to hike the Underground Railroad Experience Trail. This starts at Woodlawn Manor, at the intersection of Norwood Road and Ednor Road south of Sandy Spring. A map and brochure for the trail can be picked up at the trailhead. It's a little over one mile from there to the spring. This cache is a replacement for Secret Spring (GCGC22) which disappeared in 2007. It was moved farther from the spring to avoid the possibility that maintenance volunteers discovered, and removed, the previous cache. You can read more about the Sandy Spring at www.sandyspringgreenspace.org/portfolio/sandyspring.htm UPDATE (2014-11-08): There is now a locked gate at the end of the paved road. You can no longer drive right up to the Sandy Spring, but you can still park just before the gate (a little short of the posted parking coordinates) and walk the 0.3 mile dirt road to the springs and cache. Another alternate parking waypoint has been added at the end of Auburn Village Drive. The hike from there is only slightly longer and takes you past the largest ash tree in Maryland.
