Geocache Description:

This is a small container, off the property.

THE ENTRANCE IS JUST AT THE END OF THE LITTLE STRIP SHOPPING AREA AND BEFORE THE FIRST HOUSE at the BROADCREEK CEMETERY sign.

The cache is not at the coords above. Those are for parking area.

This will be 1 of several caches in the SPIRIT QUEST. It is a little different type of series from my others but it still has its history.

The Christ Episcopal Church in Stevensville is the home of the oldest Christian congregation in what is now the State of Maryland, having been established by William Claiborne in 1631. This settlement was at Kent Fort, however the exact location has not been established due to the vast amount of erosion sustained on the island over the years.

In 1652, a new church was built at Broad Creek which had, by that time, become the center of activity on the island. The area boasted a courthouse, jail, tavern, and a post office, in addition to Christ Church. It is said that the parishioners could come to church by boat. In 1959, The Maryland Historical Society placed a commemorative marker at the site.

This building was rebuilt & repaired several times until the 1870's when it was deemed unusable. Some of the bricks from the old building are believed to have been used in the construction of the new church which was built in 1880 in nearby Stevensville. This building is still in use & was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in July, 1979.

The cemetery has been landscaped & is kept up mostly by volunteers. It also has no restriction on the religion of anyone wishing to be placed here. It is a small cemetery of about 220 sites of which only about 2 dozen graves currently exist.

You will see some white stakes around the middle of the cemetery. These are placed at where the corner of the original church was. The foundation still remains below ground level. Please do not disturb these stakes.

***READ-There is a small section in the far back left corner, that has a low chain around it, that holds what has been found so far as the OLDEST documented grave on Kent Island.

The cache is not on the grounds out of respect. It is located just off the road. However to be able to find the cache you must go to the grave site, mentioned above, & take a reading then do the math. It would be nice to know what date you found on that head stone.. It will be a little difficult to read the date because it is so old & weathered but do the best you can :) (Do not post date on cache page) The gentleman laid at rest here is Robert Wilson. There is no other info on him.

Take a few moments just to reflect & enjoy the serenity of this location. Please Enjoy.

Along with your reading do the following: from the N subtract .052 from the W add .037

Now you can look for the cache. When you get close your GPS may bounce a little but you should not have any trouble locating the cache. Good Luck.
