High Point Amphitheatre Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

OReviewer: From the Northern Region Office, New Jersey State Parks Department:

Over a year ago New Jersey enacted a policy that all geocachers must obtain a permit to have their cache on State Park property. We have informed all geocaching host that this is their responsibility and have given them ample time to go about getting their permits. At this time, over a year later, there are still several caches that haven’t complied.

We ask that as the land managers for the attached properties we would like to have these illegal caches removed.

Based on the list provided by the state, I am forced to archive this listing. If you have a permit, get a permit or don't believe your cache is on state park/forest land, please contact me via email. Make sure you include the GC code.

If you don't plan to get a permit, please remove your geocache so it doesn't become geo-trash.

Geocache Description:

Great location in High Point. Two entry points so pick your hike 0.5miles/200ft-elevation variance or 1.1/750ft-elevation rise

This is a standard ammo can hidden in a rocky outcropping. There are two ways in.

The short hike is via the main park entrance. You'll park near a large stone building and enter the trail by a post with the number "6" on it (there is a well-worn cement post that has the name "Monument Trail" barely visible.) Trail markers are green and red. That is a very pretty path, mostly level, with only 200 feet of elevation change (dip, then rise, so you get it both ways). That's the "official" way in and the terrain rating is based on that entry.

The other is via the Steenykill boat launch area. Park near the boat lauunch then walk along the side of the lake following the blue markers, then up the slope. When you get to the "T" you've intersected the Monument trail. Cache is about 0.15 miles from there. A fair terrain rating for that entry would be 3.0, maybe 3.5

Both paths cross a wooden bridge with a small waterfall just after the "T". Exercise due care in icy weather.

Cache has several Geocoins and a pair of travelbugs I've held for far too long. Also has an unregistered geocoin as FF prize.

Cache is about 30 feet off the trail. That bit of mild bushwacking added half a point to the terrain rating for the short hike.
