Geocache Description:


The cache is located close to the apppropriately named "Rookery Pool" in what was the grounds of the former Vale Royal Abbey.

Now the home of the Vale Royal Abbey Golf Club, the original abbey was founded in 1270. Seven years earlier, Prince Edward, later to be Edward 1, was returning from the crusades when his ship was struck by a terrible storm. Fearing for his life, the prince vowed that, should he be saved, he would build an abbey in the most beautiful part of England which "he would so richly endow with goods and possessions that it should be sufficient for the maintenance of one hundred monks for ever."
Larger than even Westminster Abbey, Vale Royal was the largest Cistercian Abbey in England.

In 1543 the abbey was demolished by order of Henry Vlll and many of the stones were used to build the mansion house which now forms the golf club's clubhouse.

The cache may be approached by public footpaths across the golf course (parking in St Mary's Drive) or through Vale Royal Woods (parking in School Lane, Hartford.) Care should be taken if crossing the A556.
