Geocache Description:

This cache is within the Cat/Thomas Mountain Preserve maintained by the Lake George Land Conservancy. Please respect their property and the rules that they have made to protect the beautiful lands that they have purchased.

The cache is hidden near Thomas Mountain, an often overlooked peak north of its twin and more popular Cat Mountain. The hike is about 1.5 mi each way via the Yellow to the Orange trail toward the cabin, with an overall 750-foot vertical gain from the trailhead and small parking area along Valley Woods Road at N43 36.219 W73 41.573.

Hiking via the Yellow to the Orange trail, which are old logging roads that are broad and rocky, bring you past an old cabin with great views southward to Cat Mountain and of Lake George from its porch.

The cache can be hunted along with our others in this Preserve. This would be a great snowshoe hike in the winter. A Garmin Map60Cx w/WAAS corrections was used to establish this cache. Enjoy, and post your photos.

A little back story to explain this cache name. We feed the wild birds at home and crows and grackles would hog the seed, so I bought an Owl decoy to place in the yard to scare them away. It worked. But it also scared away ALL the birds! My wife, who’s caching name is Hootyhoo, became quite upset with me and told me to get rid of that stupid Owl. When I said it could not be returned (it was expensive!) she said, “then, go hide it in the woods as a geocache”!
