Geocache Description:

Bowling Green, State Road 46.

This long-storied sign was refurbished in the summer of 2007. The committee did a wonderful job of renewing the sign.

The short version of the sign is-
The first white man in what is now Clay county was David Thomas. He settled in 1812 on land purchased from the indians. He built a ferry across the Eel River and blazed a trail to Terre Haute in 1817. Bowling Green served as the County seat from 1826 until 1877. Lore has it that the records were stolen in the dead of night and moved to Brazil, which has served as the Clay County seat since.

The old brick jail still stands south of SR46 on Lafayette Street.

Lock-N-Lock with goodies and log. Please seal carefully-it's full right now. Hilly, rough terrain with stumps where the brush was cleared. Please be careful.
