Geocache Description:

This is the first in a series of three caches each with an astronomical theme. The ultimate goal is to find Polaris, the North Star, around which the circumpolar constellations rotate in a counter clockwise direction.

There are 88 official constellations or star patterns as establishd by the International Astronomical Union (I.A.U.) in the 1930's (this is the same group that removed Pluto from the planet club this past year). Ursa Major, or the Great Bear, is one of the most easily recognizable constellations in the northern hemisphere and contains the unofficial pattern (or asterism) known as the "Big Dipper." Explorers, campers, and scouts of all types have used the "pointer stars" found in the Big Dipper to find Polaris which indicates the direction of true north.

In this cache you must find Merak, one of the pointer stars. It is the more southerly and fainter of the two stars and has a visual or apparent magnitude of about 2 which makes it easily visible in the evening sky. Once you find this first cache, you must record the listed coordinates for Merak and then move on to cache number two - Dubhe.

This is a small cache with some small trade items. There are various coupons and stickers for the first finders. Please leave the coordinates for Merak for the next finder. Thanks. Good luck and God bless you!
