If you are going to search for this cache by boat, you may put in
at Pony Pasture and take out at the James River Park canoe access
off of Riverside Drive. Please be aware that you will encounter
some rapids, but they will be easily manageable when the water is
low.
If you are adventureous, there are several ways to approach by
foot. But first be advised, I wouldn't attempt this any time except
during the summer and early fall when the water is low. You may
start where I did on the north side of the river at the Texas
Avenue parking lot (park at the end of the lot near the street
because of cars sometimes being broken into on the other end which
is hidden from view of houses). From this trailhead, you will be
able to follow narrow paths through dense woods. From the map
below, you may be tempted to start from the Pumphouse near the
Boulevard Bridge, but I would advise against this due to the fact
that you would have to trespass on the railroad. Not only is this
dangerous but getting caught carries a hefty fine.
You may also start from the southside of the river. Park in any
of the lots along Riverside Drive. Starting from this side of the
river will require you to cross the main channel of the river, so
expect to swim some.
The spoiler includes specific information narrowing down the
location of the island and what to look for.
