The cache is Not in the Mine Tunnel. It is a Military Ammo Can.
This cache is near the entrance to a horizontal mine tunnel which we have explored several times.
THE CACHE IS NOT LOCATED INSIDE.
The Mine Tunnel at this location is horizontal and shored by solid timbers. There are a number of internal "rooms" to explore and interesting markings on the timbers and mine walls. There are a large number of boxed and shored vertical tunnels that lead UP to higher levels of the Gold mine. Most of these tunnels have ladders going up. I attempted to climb one of the ladders to look around.. but it seemed a little scary at the top, so went no further. There is much to see (only if you have a light source!)
You NEED to take multiple sources of lighting if you go in. We took a Battery operated lantern and four LED flashlights.
You do NOT want to take a gasoline lantern!!! Remember you need to breathe. The air in the tunnel seemed quite good and there was an airflow through the tunnel that could be felt.
We went in several hundreds of feet and turned off our lights. It doesn't get blacker than this anywhere on this earth!!!
In places the shaft walls were polished smooth indicating "Slip Slide" or the movement of two plates along a fault in the earth over thousands of years. If you look for it you will see it. Gold is often found along fault lines and it seems that the tunnel followed such a fault in the earth.
If you don't choose to go in the tunnel you will have plenty to see on the outside. Be sure to notice the old wooden ore chute in front of the mine.
In our opinion this is the best tunnel to tour.
