Geocache Description:

Located near the Big Salkehatchie River. Parking is available at the public boat ramp and it’s a scenic walk along the river to the cache.

After spending Christmas in Savannah, Gen. W. T. Sherman continued his “total war” on the Confederacy with a march to Columbia.

On February 3-5, 1865, as Gen. W. T. Sherman's Federals advanced towards Columbia, units of Gen. J. A. Logan's XV Corps approached Buford's Bridge. Gen. Joseph Wheeler's Confederate calvary burned the bridge, then evacuated the earthworks before Logan arrived on Feb. 4th. Federals destroyed most of the buildings in the area to build bridges and left only Mizpah Methodist Church intact.

When you finish this cache, take some time to visit Rivers’ Bridge State Historic Site just a few miles downriver to learn more of the story.
