Get Your Kicks On Route 66
Enjoy your drive down the Mother Road.
The intent of this series is to point out
historic or unique places along old route 66 between IL and CA. It
is NOT meant to be a power trail as caches may be 50 miles or more
apart. Stop and enjoy these sights along the way.
The Stony Dell Resort contained not only the Swimming Pool featured
in another RT 66 cache but also: A store, restaurant, cabins for
rent, boating, fishing and tennis. Below you will find some of the
remains of this once very popular RT 66 resort.
In the picture above you see what remains of the store and on the
other side is what is left of the restaurant. An interesting tidbit
about the restaurant was that they had live tanks inside fed by
spring water that kept live fish. If you wanted a catfish dinner
you could just point out which fish and have it prepared for you.
There were two different kinds of cabins for rent. The wooden
cabins pictured above and the rock cabins pictured below. The
cabins rented for $1 to $2 a day.
There are other neat rock constructions in the area including the
two pictured below:
The cache is located down the road a little from the actual RT 66
remnants because I could not get a cache in exactly due to the .10
mile rule. The cache is a decon can and contains a log and pencil
as well as a few trinkets to get started.
The store, restaurant and other things are located on private
property and there are No Trespassing signs.....please respect
those signs. All pictures taken and shown here were done from
outside the property. Up the road from here is more RT 66 remains
and some really cool rock work done by a local man. This is also
Private Property and the owner is very sensitive to trespassers.
Please respect her wishes.
The cache is located along the right of way of the road and can be
reached by parking across from the buildings pictured above and
taking a walk down the road 200 - 300 feet. The parking area is
public property as is the artesian well and everyone who stops to
see it parks there.
I hope you enjoy the cache and are having a lot of fun travelling
down the "Great Mother Road"
