What better place for a hide than right under the noses of the
guards. Yes, you are being watched, so be cool, and act natural.
This is the (former) P4W, which closed about 10 years ago, and now
houses the PENITENTIARY
MUSEUM. The adjacent site, very close by to the north, has been
sold to Queen's University. To the south is the infamous Kingston
Pen, home to the worst criminals in Canada. All the structures on
this property...buildings, fences, stonework, etc, were all built
by inmates.
The site is open to the public. The vehicle entrance is off Sir
John A MacDonald Blvd SOUTHBOUND ONLY, south of Union street, north
of King Street. There is plenty of free car parking. The most
interesting way to GZ however, is the short walk from Portsmouth
Olympic Harbour, just across the street (also plenty of free car
parking). There is an ornate gate on King street, right across from
the main entrance to Kingston Pen.
The site has lots of green space and is kid and dog friendly. It
is an easy 2 minute walk to GZ, no bushwacking. There is no snow
removal to GZ however, so snow can be a problem. This cache can be
done in under 10 minutes. The museum, open during the summer
months, is excellent, and includes real jail cells (entrance fee is
by donation, usually one coin).
The walls of the prison have now been removed, the site cleaned
up, and the construction/demolition ended. Access from Union street
is now an interesting alternate route to the cache. There is a
paved path at the extreme west end of the grounds, right below the
one remaining wall. As you walk this path, see the remains of the
prison, and try to imagine the women who once called this
home....spooky.
Congratulations to Hypocorism on the FTF.
Congratulations also to all the others who braved the cold, wind,
snow and dark to find this cache on Nov 30 for the FARE THEE WELL
