Crater Rock is a four metre high glacial erratic found in the Calgary community of Panorama Hills.
About 18 000 years ago, this large block of quartzite known to geologists as an erratic, was part of a rockslide near Jasper Alberta. The rock landed on top of a glacier, which moved eastward until it collided with the Laurentide ice sheet and began moving southeast. As the glacier melted, it deposited boulders along a corridor from Jasper National Park to northern Montana. Today this is known as the Foothills Erratic Train, a 644 kilometre long chain of glacial deposits of which the Big Rock outside Okotoks is the largest. The buffalo used this rock as a rubbing stone to remove their heavy winter coats.
