From this log
only nano cache (BYOP)you look across the highway
at the Vandenberg "Peat Bog" in Barka Slough.
DO NOT cross the fence,
security forces take a dim view of trespass and you do not want an
M-16 in your ear
Believe it or not the low lying area to the south west is a bog
that is filled over 100 feet deep with peat (a collection of dead
organic material that burns really well). Not too long ago a wind
driven, very fast moving fire swept through this valley. This fire
ignited the top layers of the peat and it began to burn, and burn,
and burn.
For days, then weeks into months the peat smoldered as the fire
worked its way deeper and deeper into the bog. There were days when
Highway 1 was closed in the morning because of the dense mix of
smoke and the ever present fog (marine layer). They still have
signs at Clark Avenue and HWY 135 that were used to tell motorists
of the closures.
Much of what you see here was ash during that time, and the only
thing that put this out were water canons, along the side of the
highway that sprayed the bog day and night for months until it was
finally extinguished.
Also note: this part of HWY 1 is a “Dual Enforcement” area. Both
the CHP and the AF Security Police patrol and enforce traffic law
on this road. Sometimes either agency may use this piece of ground
as a speed enforcement area. If they are using it, might I suggest
you come back another time?
Terrain difficulty because of slope. Some may call this a micro
cache others a nano cache, it's small.
