"INDIANA SPIRIT
QUEST"
The Indiana Spirit Quest
series of geocaches will take you to a number of historic
cemeteries built by Hoosier Pioneers. In the past three years,
the quest has grown to over five hundred eighty caches hidden in
Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and Ontario, and the hiders have grown to
over thirty cacher teams, most of which are comprised of Dogs
and their Humans. Over 1,000 cacher teams
have logged over 25,000 finds.

INDIANA
SPIRIT QUEST #582
"Reflect on
the Past"
This quest will bring you to
Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Marion Township of Putnam County.
Established in 1841, this old cemetery is well-maintained. In fact,
this cemetery was restored by a dedicated group of volunteers in
2003. The numerous markers that have fallen over or otherwise
disintegrated is simply a testament to their age—not lack of
maintenance.
The
inspiration for the title of this cache was the richness of the
history represented at this site. Of the approximately 220 people
buried here, only a handful died in the twentieth century. The
overwhelming majority of those buried here died in the mid- to
late-nineteenth century. There are a handful of more-modern
markers, but these are simply replacements for older
markers.
NOTE:
The posted coordinates are not the location of the cache. This is a
letterbox hybrid cache, which means that the posted coordinates
will take you to the starting point. You must then follow the steps
outlined below to reach the location of the cache. For those
hard-core geocachers who prefer to skip the letterbox instructions
and go straight to the cache, you will find the final coordinates
in the hint below.
The steps should be very easy to follow. Here are the detailed
steps to reach the cache
site:
You must start by finding your way to the
Town of Fillmore, Indiana. Go south out of Fillmore on Co. Rd. 550E
(that’s Main Street, as well) about one-half mile to Co. Rd. 50S
(you will come to a “T” intersection). Go west (right) on Co. Rd.
50S about one-quarter mile to Co. Rd. 525E. Turn south (left) on
Co. Rd. 525E and Mt. Carmel cemetery will be on your right. (See
note about parking below.) After parking, your journey will begin
at the Mt. Carmel Cemetery sign (this is where the posted
coordinates should lead you). Starting at the sign, walk
approximately 20 paces west until you reach a large stone that does
not mark a grave. Turn in the direction that led to victory in the
Civil War. Walk until you reach the tallest, southernmost stone in
that row. Pay your respects to Harvey Nicholas, then proceed
further south and a little ways west until you reach what you seek
at the intersection of a living tree and one of its fallen
comrades.
Parking: Mt. Carmel cemetery is along a county
road and does not have a designated parking area. There is room to
park along the side of the road in front of the cemetery. Although
there is not too much traffic in the area, please use care when
parking and entering/leaving the
area.
Mt. Carmel Cemetery is the
final resting place of Revolutionary War Veteran Julius Glazebrook.
Mr. Glazebrook was born April 15, 1752, and died September 14,
1847. He served in Virginia for 8 months during the Revolutionary
Way, under Capt. Thomas Williams and Capt. Andrew
Wal.
John W. Knight served in the
Civil War as a member of the 11th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer
Infantry.
Benjamin C. Brown served in
the Civil War as a Private in Company I of the 11th Regiment,
Indiana Volunteer Infantry.
John M. Bowman served in the
Civil War as a Private in Company H of the 11th Regiment, Indiana
Volunteer Infantry. Two of Mr. Bowman’s brothers, Charlie P. Bowman
and George W. Bowman, also served in Company H of the 11th
Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and are buried
nearby.
Harvey Clark also served in
the Civil War in Company H of the 11th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer
Infantry.
James Steers served in the
Civil War in Company I of the 27th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer
Infantry.
Mashaek Fitzsimmones served
in the Mexican War in Company I of the 1st Regiment, Indiana
Volunteer Infantry.
In the woods on the southern
side of the cemetery, you can find piles of the pieces of old
stones that are beyond repair or
unidentifiable.

FIND LOGS THAT
INDICATE NIGHT CACHING WILL BE DELETED WITHOUT
NOTICE!
The cache container is an ammo can.
There are two logs in the cache. One is a standard geocaching
log book. The other is a letterbox log for those of you with
stamps. To encourage letterboxers to “Reflect on the Past,” I
have placed a hand-carved “mirror image” stamp in the cache.
Other typical trade items are available in the cache as well.
Enjoy!
You MUST sign the log to claim a valid
find on this cache. If you cache at night, don't sign the log,
reveal additional hints in your log, or don't fulfill any
additional requirements, your find log will be deleted without
notice. If you think these terms to be unfair, don't bother to hunt
this cache. The cache is not located near a grave. If you find a
fallen US flag, please stick it back in the ground. As always,
please be respectful of our pioneer dead and our beloved Veterans,
and cache in, trash out. Say a prayer for our brave troops,
fighting for Freedom overseas. God Bless
America!
