A favourite walk for Tosca our geo-hound. This route takes you over fields and up over Purton Common with lovely views.
Park near waypoint 1 (N51 35.476 W1 52.415) at the top of the Jubilee Estate in Purton. Follow paths across the fields to waypoint 2 (N51 35.485 W1 52.705). The stile is a few yards down the road on the left. Walk down past the farm with a number of different animals and chickens for children to look at. In the dip there is a boggy patch where a stream runs down the hill. NOT SUITABLE TO CROSS AFTER A SPELL OF VERY WET WEATHER!(See note below).
Follow path up hill, there is another waypoint 3 (N51 35.461 W1 52.947) for another stile but there are several routes up the hill to the cache. The grassy field at the top of the hill is of interest, Roman artifacts have been discovered nearby, also the site was a stop-over point for troops in the Civil War. You can see 'living hedges' that the land owner has been restoring over the last couple of years. You may also see traditional bred animals. Enjoy the views of Cricklade and Braden Forest.
Wellies advised even in dry weather! Look out for boggy patches on the Common. Unsuitable for pushchairs.
NOTE You can also park near the Royal George pub at the Paven Hill end of Purton and take the footpaths behind the New Greyhound pub further up. Take care crossing the road. This would be advisable if weather has been very wet as it would be less boggy.
