Geocache Description:

A cache at a site of historical interest - easy terrain and not too difficult.

So let us explain "More Footsteps of Romans and Heroes":

More:
The very first cache we set up was Footsteps of Romans and Heroes (GCPR2E) associated with this historical site. Unfortunately it got muggled and we archived the cache. This is a new cache with a new hiding place, but still associated with the same Romans and Heroes.

Romans:
The cache is on an old Roman Road going north from Sandy in Bedfordshire.

Heroes:
In the Second World War, men and women of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) were flown into Nazi occupied Europe from RAF Tempsford which used to exist near where this cache is situated. The runway and taxiway for the airfield still exist, but are no longer used by aircraft. There is a barn nearby which houses memorials to RAF aircrew and SOE agents. Further information can be found on various websites including www.wartimememories.co.uk and the website for Carpetbagger Aviation Museum, Harrington, Northamptonshire which contains exhibits and displays connected to the airfield.

Please note: The barn is on private property and should not be visited without prior permission. This permission can be sought by ringing 01767 650251 beforehand. The airfield can be seen by going north along the footpath from the parking co-ordinates.

To get the cache:
Easy roadside parking is available at the cache's headline co-ordinates. The idea of this cache is that you do some research on the internet to find out about the history of the airfied and its wartime story.

In the barn (which you must not visit without prior permission - see above) there is a plaque "erected to commemorate the brave deeds of the men and women of every nationality who flew from this wartime airfield to the Forces of the Resistance in [omitted] and other countries during the years 1942 to 1945". How many countries are named in the "[omitted]"? The answer is "A" and can be found by searching the web.

Two airmen who flew from Tempsford Airfield were Grp/Capt C.P. Pickard and Flt/Lt A. Broadley. They were killed in action on BC-D-1944. "B", "C" and "D" can be found by searching online.

The cache can be found at N52 09.0D0 W000 15.(C-B)(A-D)B.
