A short walk along a nice strech of coast, with great views to Scotland, Ailsa Craig and Black Head Lighthouse.
Cache is a medium tab-lock box containing the usual assortment of swaps.
After having been re-introduced to the joys of the outdoors by geocaching, I joined the NICS Rambling Club for a bit of company and have picked up the odd cache or two on our wanderings.
After a few trips where I kept thinking "pity there are no caches around here", I decided to bring along a ready prepared cache in my rucksac to be dropped off if any suitable spot presented itself.
This is one of those caches of opportunity.
The walk starts at the same parking spot as "The Gobbins" by gilliancclarke (GC11TQF) and the trail passes close by her cache, so more cache for your walking :)
From the parking laybay, head down the lane opposite, down past the cottages and round to the right down a fairly steep path.
At the bottom climb over the gate and follow the obvious trail towards and past the ruined building.
The trail then continues along the coast, and you drop down to a short walk along the shoreline at N54 47.490 W5 41.564.
Walk along the pebbled shore to N54 47.423 W5 41.560, then follow the obvious trail leading up onto the back of the headland.
Once on top, use the trail and your GPSr needle to take you to the cache.
The walk follows a rough trail and at points comes close to the edge of some short drops, so while it is not particularly dangerous, care should be taken, and any children should be well supervised. Round trip distance is just about two miles.
