Watson Wander Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Captain Tomato: I'm sorry to say this cache has had its day. It has gone missing, but the location has always given me grief with bugs in the container, leaves covering the hide, and location creep. Thanks for all the great comments from finders.

Geocache Description:

This is an easy multi cache that takes in some of the public (educational) institutions in one of Canberra’s more established suburbs, which (conveniently) is where I live. The cache is a micro and does not have a writing implement, so please bring a pen to sign the log with.

As described in Wiki, Watson was named after John Christian Watson who held the office of Prime Minister of Australia for only a brief time (April to August) in 1904. John (Chris) Watson was the third Prime Minister of Australia, and the first Federal Parliamentary Leader of the Australian Labour Party. He was also recognised as the first Labour Prime Minister in the world. He was considered a sincere, courteous and moderate PM.

The suburb of Watson was gazetted on 7 April 1960. Streets are named after Australian judges and other legal professionals. Much of Watson remains unchanged, including the old sign for the long since abandoned ‘Starlight’ drive-in.

The way-points for this cache (unintentionally) follow the various stages of learning, but in reverse order. Visit the published coordinates to find the answers to clues to the next WP and so on. This cache can be completed on foot, push-bike or by car. Please be careful at GZ as the cache is fairly close to a busy public area.

TO THE CACHE

At the posted coordinates look for a 3-word sign (NOTE: this area is currently undergoing renovations and the words have been removed. So, to help with the calculations for this cache I am providing the required words - which are: "Australian" "Catholic" "University"). Count the number of letters in each word. To work out the coordinates for WP 1, do the following calculations.

S35 14.(letters in 1st word – 6) (letters in 2nd word – 6) (letters in 3rd word – 9)
E149 08.(letters in 1st word – 1) (letters in 2nd word – 2) (letters in 3rd word – 5)

At WP 1 look for another 3-word sign (the most prominent sign over the entrance). Using the same letter count procedure, calculate WP 2.

S35 14.(1st word – 5) (2nd word – 9) ( 3rd word + 4)
E149 09.(1st word – 6) (2nd word – 3) (3rd word + 5)

At WP 2 look for yet another 3-word sign. Calculate WP 3 as previously.

S35 14.(1st word – 3) (2nd word – 3) (3rd word – 1)
E149 09.(1st word – 5) (2nd word – 1) (3rd word + 3)

At WP 3 look for a local phone number. Calculate the coordinates for the nearby GZ as follows:

S35 14.ABC
E149 09.DEF

A = 2nd + 4th numbers
B = last number
C = 3rd number
D = 4th number
E = 1st + 5th numbers
F = 7th + last numbers

(Checksums: S22 E35)
