Geocache Description:

Located in Rancho Penasquitos in an area that will one day become a shopping center.

The cache is located in an area called Rhodes Crossing. This section of land has been been approved for development by the San Diego Planning Board. The loal residents fought Keith Rhodes at planning board meetings to alter the orignal designs to eliminate the inclusion of a big box outlet (Walmart, Costco, Hone Depot, etc.). Thankfully, the plans were altered but one day this native landscape will become a shopping center and houses. There will also be a church in the development. The development was suppose to start in 2005 but has been delayed, perhaps due to the housing slump(?). Once development begins the cache will need to be moved. Enjoy this area before it is gone forever.

Once at the cache, if you look to the west you will see Deer Canyon. At one time Hwy 56 was suppose to cut through this canyon since it was the shortest route to the coast. Environmentalist won the battle for a northen route for Hwy 56 and this beautiful canyon was saved. Best to hike in from N 32-57.209, W 117-08.869. There is parking available on the dirt and there is a trail that starts here. There are several no trespassing signs posts in this area. I live right by this area and people park and hike, walk dogs, etc. in this area every day. I believe they put the signs up to give them the ability to go after the dirt bikes and people with 4X4 who occassionally tear thru these fields. The area is going to be totally graded one day so I highly doubt they would be concerned about hikers. Then again, I'm not a lawyer so don't rely completely on my advice.

The cache was placed by Abby and her friends as part of Abby's 10th birthday party. The girls also found the Wheels cache which is close by.
