The Tidewater Pipe Co. was formed in 1878 to attempt to transport
crude in the first oil pipeline 109 miles across the
mountainous terrain to Williamsport, Pa. The construction of the
pipeline ranks as one of the all-time great achievements in the
annals of oil exploration.
This is the approximate site of Pump Station #1 on the Tidewater
pipeline. On May 28 1879, the 80-horsepower pumps located in
Coryville sent an oil flow of 250 barrels an hour through a 6 inch
pipeline across the mountains and ultimately into Williamsport on
June 4th. The Tidewater Pipe Company sucessfully destroyed the
Standard Oil Company's (John D. Rockefeller) monopoly on oil
transportation by rail.
