A traditional cache - Part 1 of Maux Faux's Mt. Laura Trail
Welcome to ‘Stig of the Dump’ a traditional cache in the arid foothills of Mount Laura, Whyalla.
Another instalment in the series of Maux Faux caches in this area, one of extensive bird and reptile life and featuring an interesting and fragile desert ecology.
The interesting thing about this old BHP quarry, apart from now that it is unfortunately the haunt of few local redneck fly tippers (illegal dumpers), is the geology here. Exposed areas show the sandstone that was once dug from here, a lot of sedimentary layering and some funky weathering patterns. This geology is quite different to the rest of that visible in the local area.
The cache is named after a favourite childhood book ‘Stig of the Dump’, written by Clive King in 1963 and which later became a television series in 1981. Stig is a caveman who lives at the bottom of the old quarry close to Barney's grandmother's house. Since the quarry is no longer in use, people throw all their rubbish away down there. Barney finds Stig by falling through the roof of Stig's den. Barney and Stig become friends, even though they cannot talk to each other. Stig and Barney have a series of adventures together, including catching burglars breaking into Barney's grandmother's house. One night Barney and his sister Lou cannot sleep and get transported back to Stig's time where they spend a night helping his tribe complete a megalith.
Anyway, reminiscing aside, the cache is a small camouflage sistema box, containing a log book and suitable swaps for a dump. Try to keep to the dump creatures theme if you can. Also, don’t forget to CITO recyclables…the current and only record is a lousy 5c worth. There is a small FTF prize and the Sniffer Skunk begins his journey here.
