An overlooked Historic Dam Location in Rehoboth
This cache is a recycled location originally found and listed by WaldenRun that had not been found since January 2007 and eventually archived in September. I never found "Got Dam", and placed it on my "DNF Watch list" for pretty much the whole year. I decided to replace / adopt this location, with the blessing of the original owner, as I was really taken back by this historic site and felt the need to share it, as others have shared their great locations with us. First by how well the dam has been recently restored, but mostly, how easy it is to imagine this dam and sluice-way in operation.
After you find the cache, (Tupperware ALWAYS comes before sightseeing), follow the sluice-way or "ditch" closest to the parking, across the street to the stone foundations on the other side of the white house(#125). Its easy for most everyone to visualize the waterwheel that once must have turned at this location, and how the whole thing worked. This is probably one of the most well preserved water mill sites in the state that is accessible and not overgrown. The spillway is about 30' across and has a drop of about 8'. The marker on site states that it was in operation from 1740 till 1935. In that this small mill and 3.3 acre pond were still operational within my fathers lifetime, and for some 195 years, speak of how efficient this water powered operation must have been.
The cache is a easy typical geocache hide. Suitable for all but the truly wheelchair bound. Careful footing is required for the last 15' or so because of vines and slight underbrush. A picnic table is on site if the weathers right. It is NOT located in any of the stone work in the area, so with that said, leave the "dam thing" alone and please do not disturb the walls.
Please be careful in replacing the cache and that it is secure.
The pond is very close, and small children should be carefully watched near water or on top of the dam, especially in winter months with ice. The original "Leap of Faith" is no longer required, but certainly can be done for fun! The hardest part of this might be finding the right back road into or out of the area, but any drive through country like this is worth the trip!
The largest Buck I have ever seen was spied here during the day. Fishermen may make this a challenging find in the “season”.
Since this is a small cache, don't plan on leaving that stuffed animal travel bug here, but coins and small trade items will fit. No hints to begin with!
Congratulations to YBLee the FTF Machine!!
