Geocache Description:

Easy walk to the falls along a paved path. This Earth Cache is handicap friendly.

A stream valley can be divided into two general types, narrow V-shaped valleys and wide valleys with flat bottoms. The type of valley gives an indication of what the stream has been doing. A narrow V-shaped valley indicates that the primary work of the stream has been down cutting. The most prominent features of a narrow valley are rapids and waterfalls. Both occur where the stream profile drops rapidly, a situation usually caused by variations in the erodibility of the bedrock the stream channel is cutting. As the water cascades over resistant bedrock rapids are formed producing a temporary base level upstream while down cutting continues downstream. As erosion eliminated the resistant bedrock the stream profile smoothes out again and the water begins to pool. A water fall is a place where the stream profile makes a vertical drop.

The Falls are supported by a resist bed of Laurel Limestone that is underlain by a layer of less resistant Osgood Clay Shale. As the water plunges over the lip of the falls it eroded the less resistant Osgood Clay Shale, undermining the Laurel Limestone, which eventually broke off creating the falls.

To avoid being towed and blocking the Ludlow Falls Fire Department, please park at N39° 59.896 and W084° 20.278.

The falls are adjacent to N39° 59.897 and W084° 20.245.

Please take a picture at N39° 59.906 and W084° 20.240.

Please Do NOT cross any fences or guard rails and remain of the paved path when viewing the Falls. Ludlow Falls is a beautiful place to visit when the snow is falling.
