Markeri is now only an historic site whereas once it was the social centre for the local pioneer farming community.
In 1917 eight local farmers acquired the land and a hall was built. It was first known as King of the River Hall and later the Hundred of Bookpurnong School. In 1929 the name was changed to Markeri. The building was used as a school from 1920 to 1942, as a public hall, and the Congregational Church and Sunday School before being demolished in the 1950’s. Tennis courts were built adjacent and the hall was used as a clubhouse. Later a public sheep dipping facility was established nearby. In 1988 a ‘Back to Markeri’ reunion was held and a plaque unveiled by a former student of the school, Gemmell Payne. Gemmell was a local champion tennis player who played Linton Cup tennis and twice won the South Australian country tennis championship.
