Geocache Description:

A nice History spot, with a Grotto shrine to pray. Please respect the quiet prayerful nature of the Grotto. This was the site of Johnny Wards Ranch. Cache is kid friendly with log book and various items.

Johnny ward established a ranch here in 1838. In October, 1860 A raid occurs at Johnny Ward's ranch. His cattle and stepson Felix Ward (also known as Mickey Free) were captured. Army officers assumed that Eastern Apaches, led by Cochise, were responsible. This led to the famous conflict Lt Bascom and Cochise. On January 28, 1861 2nd Lt. George Nicholas Bascom was ordered to visit Cochise's camp at Apache Pass to recover the stock and the boy. Cochise claimed he had been taken by another group of Apache. Cochise was taken prisoner but was able to cut his way out of a tent and escape. The Americans still held prisoners and the Apache captured and killed it is believed six Americans. Bascom then ordered the hanging of six Apache prisoners. Within 60 days, approximately 150 whites were killed and five stage stations were destroyed. This was also the site of Blacksmith and Wheelwright shop. A mining Headquarters a store and finally a produce farm before it was abandon in 1903.
