This would ideally be accessed with a 4WD - although, provided
there is no inclement weather, is accessible with other vehicles
(eg. My Subaru Outback or MtBikerOz's 1WD) Discovered this coming
back to Canberra from Wee Jasper along the Doctors Flat road. The
cache is almost a drive by, you don't need to walk far off the road
itself, and is at the site of a former Sawmill.
The Hume Sawmill is a significant site representative of one of
the former land uses of the Park. An historical study of the
sawmill was undertaken in 1996, by students of the Historical
Cultural Landscapes course at the University of Canberra. The study
identified 23 major features at the site, dominated by the Sawmill
itself (comprised of concrete/timber remains and trenches), sawn
timber remains, a sawdust dump and numerous refuse piles.
The study concluded that the sawmill is a significant heritage
site because it is an example of a primary industry integral to
Australia’s history. The site also provides insights into another
era of human activity and illustrates a unique way of life in the
Australian environment. -NSW
