Mais de 10 anos passados sobre o início da Expo'98, uma das maiores marcas que ficam do evento é o projecto de recuperação urbana e ambiental de todo o espaço, e em especial da frente ribeirinha que se estende da foz do rio Trancão até muito perto de Marvila. E esta cache não é apenas uma das muitas disponíveis ao longo do que resta do recinto ou do renovado Parque Tejo, junto à Reserva Natural do Estuário do Tejo. Este poderá ser um (ou o que resta) dos únicos sítios que manteve as características naturais e identidade desde a sua formação: o sapal.
Sapal é a designação dada a um terreno alagado temporariamente inundado pelas águas de um rio e que, quando localizados junto à foz, variam com a subida e a descida das marés. As águas paradas durante largos períodos de tempo e as vagas cíclicas nutrientes trazidas pelas marés dão origem a um tipo de ecossistema muito rico e complexo, composto por uma grande variedade biológica, quer a nivel da flora quer da fauna. No caso da flora, destaca-se um tipo de vegetação designada por halofítica, assim chamada devido à sua resistência à secura provocada pelo excesso de sais no solo. Em termos de fauna, os sapais são os habitats preferenciais para numerosas espécies de aves aquáticas, para crustáceos e bivalves.
A cache está escondida no Passeio do Sapal na sequência do que era na sua versão original. O ecossistema que dá nome à via e o rio estão a dois passos, motivo pelo qual será normal a existência de materiais arrastados pelas marés. O acesso é possível 24 horas por dia. Após estacionar a sua viatura (a inexistência de waypoints adicionais é propositada) e passear um pouco ao longo do rio (como fazem centenas de pessoas diariamente) até ao ponto zero, tente ser discreto na procura da cache: um pequeno container com espaço para pequenos items de troca e trackables, naturalmente camuflado.

Over 10 years passed since the world exhibition Expo'98 start, one of the biggest landmarks remaining is the urban remake and environmental clean-up of the area due to receive the event, specially the river front, from the mouth of the Trancão river to Marvila. This is just not another cache of the many available as we walk along the river, right next to the Natural Reserve of the Tejo Estuary (Reserva Natural do Estuário do Tejo). This is one (or what's left) of the few places that kept its natural features and identity the whole time: the salt marsh.
A salt marsh is a type of wetland that is a transitional intertidal between land and salty or brackish water (e.g., sloughs, bays, estuaries) and considered one of the most biologically productive habitats on the planet. The daily tidal surges bring in nutrients, which tends to settle in roots of the plants within the salt marsh. The natural chemical activity of salty (or brackish) water and the tendency of algae to bloom in the shallow unshaded water also allow for great biodiversity. It is dominated by halophytic (salt tolerant) herbaceous plants and the fauna consists of molluscs and gastropods, although it acts as an habitat for many aquatic birds.
The cache is hidden along "Passeio do Sapal" according to its original version. The fragile eco-system that names and the river itself are quite close, so there might be a lot of stuff dragged and thrown by the tide. It's accessible round the clock. After parking your vehicle nearby and walking along the river (like hundreds of people do every day), please be discreet while looking for the cache: a little container (with some camouflage) suitable for small trading items and trackables.
