It was in 1884 when Professor W.C. Kernot, and party were attempting to find the source of the yarra river that this place was named. Story has it that He with Mr Robinson, a notable bushman, where climbing the slopes of the hill when their packhorse repeatedly slipped and fell on fallen logs. Thus it was named Mount Horsfall.
Today the area is a drive by in season with gates that are opened in the summer period. The access roads also forms part of a walking track that is open all year to walkers. A good 2wd road exists on the western side however the eastern side is 2wd friendly only in dry weather. Alternatively you can walk up from an old logging track to the north of penny saddle. The area is subject to snow in winter.
Great views can be had to the north on a good day.
The cache is a 1 litre Sistema box.
Please remember that this area forms the boundary of a domestic water catchment area and should be treated accordingly.
