Geocache Description:

The geocache hidden at the posted coordinates is a regular geocache, however, it is also part of the Allegheny GeoTrail (AGT), a publicly funded project designed to promote a pleasant and positive experience and image of the Allegheny National Forest region and its gateway communities. The AGT utilizes the growing interest in geocaching to assist both residents and visitors to the area in learning more about the unique attractions in the ten participating counties. This cache contains a unique self inking rubber stamp which you should use to stamp your Allegheny GeoTrail Passport to verify that you found it. When you have found a minimum of six AGT caches, you will be eligible to have your AGT passport validated and receive a commemorative AGT trackable geocoin at participating locations. You must have your official AGT passport with you when you find this cache in order to stamp it. Click on the Allegheny GeoTrail Logo below to visit the AGT website at www.alleghenygeotrail.com for complete details and a listing of participating locations where you may pick up and validate AGT passports to receive your souvenir geocoin, trackable at www.geocaching.com .

The 'Paved Trail' has been designated as a handicap accessable trail within Cook Forest State Park. This 1/4 mile trail is flat with a blacktop surface. It is also one of our two Allegheny GeoTrail caches. Handicap accessable parking is at 41 21.205N x 79 13.023W. The access road to these coordinates is often not plowed during the winter. If the road is closed, alternate parking can be located at the Sawmill Center for the Arts at 41 21.224N x 79 13.243W. If the Sawmill Center gate is closed as well, then you can park near the entrance at 41 21.307N x 79 13.103W, just remember not to block the roadway or the gate. This short circular loop trail winds through a mixed hemlock/beech/maple forest. Chipmunks, squirrels, and deer call this area home. This trail is actually a smaller concentric loop within the larger 'Black Bear Trail' which is known for bear claw marks on its large beech trees. Most people never venture to this seldom visited spot in Cook Forest, that is, except during our annual 'French & Indian War Encampment' held the weekend before Father's Day. Cachers, Please be on the lookout for a tomahawk that was recently lost during our French & Indian War Encampment on 6/14/09. It was reported to have been lost during one of the battles just south of the Black Bear Trail, between the cache and the pottery shed at the Sawmill Center. There is a finders reward for this item. To receive the reward, drop the piece off at the Park Office and leave your name, address, and phone number. We will ship the reward to you. A more detailed description of the search location follows: Start at the Black Bear trailhead directly across from the pottery shed at the Sawmill Center. Proceed ~100 yards down the trail to the fence barricade that was used as a defensive fort during the encampment. The piece was reported to have been lost in an easterly direction extending about 150 yards from the fort and towards the Paved Trail cache.
