Dog Day Afternoon 2009 Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

Kin9sPanK: Sirius Satellite Radio has a dog for its corporate logo. Why?

I thought that it was a nod to Victor, the mascot of the Radio Corporation of America or more familiarly, RCA. I mean, it makes sense and it is plausible, but it is more than likely just a coincidence.

Sirius is the Dog Star, the brightest star in the sky, and the reason that the dog has stars in its eyes.

Sirius would be visible to the ancient Greeks and Romans as it rose with the Sun during the 40 hottest days of the year. This period of time was known as the Dog Days in honor of Sirius, the Dog Star and would merit a canine sacrifice to appease Sirius.

The position of the Dog Star in respect to the solar system has changed since the time of the ancients, but the Dog Days live on.

The Dog Days were popularly believed to be an evil time. About 200 years ago it was considered a time "when the seas boiled, wine turned sour, dogs grew mad, and all creatures became languid, causing to man burning fevers, hysterics, and phrensies"

Fortunately, none of this traditional craziness interfered with our Dog Day celebration this year. The Dog were better behaved than the Englishmen at this event. [:p] And according to my pal Oscar, the term "dog days of summer" comes from the fact that in America 44% of all hot dogs are sold in the summer time. [;)]

I would like to thank everyone for coming out to join us and show off their canine companions. Look for another dog event next year and remember that you cannot spell Kin9 without K9. [:D]

Geocache Description:

An Event to celebrate and share with our canine companions in Warwick Park.

In June 2005, the first Dog Day Afternoon event was held. It was an intimate gathering in Chester County's Warwick Park. It was a gathering of primarily human cachers and only one canine, Sarah.

Sarah the GeoDog

Sarah was, of course, the center of attention and this was her first Geocaching event. Sarah was dubbed SEPAG's Official GeoDog, but the part of the event that Sarah enjoyed the most was leading the human cachers on a walking tour of Warwick Park's three caches.

Sarah Died in August 2007. It was a sad occasion, but Sarah would not want to be remembered with tears, but with the joy and excitement and love that she brought to the original Dog Day Afternoon Event and everyone that she cached with.

We will be reuniting some of the human participants of the original Dog Day Afternoon Event as well as inviting new cachers both human and canine alike. This Event is dedicated to Sarah, SEPAG's First GeoDog and is a celebration of the joy which only a canine can bring.

Our Dog Day Afternoon in 2009 will look like this (tentatively at this time):

Time Activity
11:00-11:45 Meet and Greet. This is a time for cachers, both human and canine, to get to know each other.
11:45-noon The Easter Dog Parade contest. If you have a canine costume, put it on. Dress to impress and in your Easter best. A small prize will be awarded to the winning dog.
noon-1:15 Pot Luck Lunch. This segment is primarily for the humans. Relax and grab a bite to eat - don't worry, the canines will be eating later. Please indicate what you will be bringing for lunch in your "Will Attend" note below.
1:15-2:30 The Sarah The GeoDog Memorial Cache Walk. This was Sarah's favorite thing to do at the first "Dog Day" event. The canines and their human partners will tour three caches in the park. Also P.J. Armstrong's Mirage (GCV3RH) will be retired on this walk.
2:30-3:15 Dog Biscuit Tasting. SEPAG's own "Iron Chef Canine" will be bringing a selection of treats for your dog's enjoyment.
3:15-4:00 Tail Wagging contest. Can you make your canine companion's tail wag?? A small prize will be awarded to the winner of this contest.

Remember that this event is open to all cachers canine and human alike. You do not have to have a canine companion to join in the fun.

Join us on Saturday April 11, 2009 at 11:00 under Pavilion 1 in Warwick Park. There will be an ammo can set out to help defray the cost of the pavilion.
