Geocache Description:

A multi-cache near and in woodland.
Can get muddy and slippery in winter.

The cache is in a small wood that was used as a location for the film “1984”, which was based on the novel by George Orwell and starred John Hurt and Richard Burton. The film was released on October 10th 1984. Bizarrely, for the locals, one of the characters, Julia, was seen walking through this wood, then across open land nearly a mile away and then back in this wood. The magic of cinema!

The coordinates will take you to a kissing gate where there is a plaque commemorating the designer of the white horse. Here you will find two dates. Call the digits ABCD - EFGH.

The cache, which is a camouflaged 35mm film canister, can be found at

N51° 22.DCH' W1° 59.FDH'

and contains just a logbook. BYOP.

Unfortunately due to the woodland terrain, this cache is not suitable for wheelchairs or buggies, but the parking spot does afford wide views across Wiltshire for those who may want to sit and wait. Also, when the trees are in full leaf the searcher will need to use a certain amount of “Geocacher’s Eye” – a term we coined for the technique of looking for likely hiding places while following a GPSr. Our advice is to give your GPSr time to settle and, if you can move to get a clear view of the sky, you should get to within a few feet of the cache.

Wonderful Wiltshire - part of the view from the parking place

This cache could be done as a one-off, or while doing The Wombles' Roundway Down series.
