This is a two part multi-cache which begins at the Franklin Institute. You will find a series of plaques inside the museum. Using certain dates on these plaques, you will be guided to the cache which has been placed in Fairmount Park above boathouse row and overlooking the Schuylkill River. It is stocked with mementos of the Franklin Institute. You do not need to go near the nearby patch of poison ivy to find the cache. Please rehide well.
The Franklin Institute, founded in 1824, is the oldest science and technology institution in continuous existence in North America. The present building, designed by architect John T. Windrim opened in 1934. A major architectural and cultural landmark located at 20th Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, the Institute contains a science museum, planetarium, IMAX theater, library, and Franklin Memorial Hall. The museum has many “hands-on” scientific exhibits suitable for people of all ages. The most notable exhibits are the giant walk-through heart, and the 350 ton Baldwin 60,000, a steam locomotive. Other features include a giant Foucault Pendulum, a gallery of some of Benjamin Franklin’s many inventions, a giant telescope, a flight simulator, and many entertaining and informative shows and demonstrations throughout the day. There are also special traveling exhibits. More information is available at www.fi.edu. The Benjamin Franklin National Memorial is an octagonal rotunda, 82 feet in height, inspired by the Pantheon in Rome. It houses a 4-times-life-size, marble, 30 ton statue of Benjamin Franklin on a marble pedestal rising 20 feet above the floor. There is an entry fee for the museum. However there is no charge to view the statue and the rotunda since it became a National Memorial. The hours are limited, and the Memorial can be viewed from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM, 7 days a week. The rotunda has been renovated in November 2008, and there are new instructions for locating the cache. The coordinates will place you in front of the Franklin Institute. Walk up the steps and enter the building. In the rotunda you will find interesting information about Benjamin Franklin in a series of plaques around the statue which have many dates. Find the year that Benjamin Franklin published a book on his theories of the nature of electricity. Take the last 3 digits of that year and add that number to the latitude. Find the year that the statue of Benjamin Franklin was designated a National Memorial. Take the last 3 digits of that year, subtract 190, and add that number to the longitude. Recently the Franklin Institute has been removing the plaques for special events which have been occurring with increasing frequency. Here are the dates which I will leave until the plaques are set up again. The date for the electricity book is 1751, and the date for the memorial designation is 1972. The cache is at the new coordinates about 1.2 miles away depending on your route. There is parking available near the cache, so you can drive to the area if you don’t feel like walking. Use stealth, and rehide the cache well.
