Geocache Description:

Critters
A cache filled with yucky vermin for all young –and young at heart – geocachers. Enough of a hike and views to be rewarding, not so much as to be exhausting.

We hope everyone who has visited our other cache, Dinosaurus, has enjoyed the find, and here's another one by kids (and kids at heart) for families and cachers who love creepy crawlies.  It's much more remote than the dinos, and a longer and harder hike, but we hope you enjoy the beautiful views and the nasty critters waiting for you in a medium size container.

Inventory (September 20, 2010)
Bring some critters to drop off and trade with the following:

A snake with a ridiculously stretchy tongue
A huge icky purple spider
A large blue iguana
Two roaches
Praying mantis
A scorpion
A big fat fly
A centipede

Logistics

Critters This cache is in a beautiful spot, but will take a little doing to get to.  We suggest driving to a nice parking spot at N 35 09.605 W 112 00.000 (yes, it really is exactly 112 west), about  a 40 minute drive from Flagstaff.    From there, our GPS showed a 1.1 mile hike to the cache.  There is also a 560' elevation gain, most of it in the second half of the hike.  There are  steep and loose parts on the second half, and some switchbacks.   In the picture at left, the 7 yo Flagdude has the cache about 1/3 of the way up to the site. He had no trouble making it up and back both on the site scouting hike and on the placement hike.  The trail is mostly treed, but views open up regularly as you get higher.  To the east, you'll see the wide-open expanse of Garland Prairie, beyond which you can see the San Franciso Peaks, Mount Elden, and to the SE, the Sycamore Canyon bluffs and Brins Mesa near Sedona.  Near the top, you can see Mingus Mountain to the S and Bill Williams Mountain to the W. Spectacular views of the Kaibab National Forest await, and the Flagdudes hope you enjoy the hike, the scenery, and our crawly cache.
