Geocache Description:

Flyin’ High at 1900

A Quick Hike up “Mountain Bike Hill” for Awesome Views

I was out exploring this area looking for a spectacular view and I was surprised to run into a mountain bike playground. After taking the spur trail from the Gwynn Creek/Cummins Creek connector trail off of forest road 55, I came across one of the most complex mountain bike tracks I have ever seen. There was lots of blow down in the area, so it looks like it hasn’t been used since at least the summer months, but the track is in great shape otherwise.

The hike up is about 500 feet of elevation gain if you park at the Gwynn Creek/Cummins Creek connector on forest road 55 at N44° 16.93’ W124° 03.10’. This connector allows for mountain bikes, but they are not allowed on either of the trails when you get to the spur for “Mountain Bike Hill”. The spur is located at N44° 16.661’ W124° 03.383’. I suspect that the bikers are getting up a logging road east of the hill, but if hiking, this is a much more scenic route with dense coastal forests. Once at the summit of “Mountain Bike Hill”, roughly 1900 feet, it opens to a clear cut and some spectacular views of the cascades as well as the Pacific Ocean looking north. On the day I placed the cache, I could see both Mt. Jefferson and Mt. Hood as well as Mary’s Peak and several other local summits. The cache is a small lock-n-lock located under the stump that sits highest on the hill. It is covered with some clear cut debris and bark to keep it from being found by the regular bikers that obviously take care of this track. Watch out for Skid Boy when hiking up, he apparently doesn’t like to use his front brakes when coming down.
