Geocache Description:

Just where exactly is the centre of our great city of Ottawa? This cache has been placed to help resolve that most perplexing conundrum.

Upon amalgamation in 2001, this question assumed even more problematic proportions. Overnight, Ottawa became the fourth-largest city in Canada. It instantly grew its population to 854,000 and its area to 2,760 square kilometers - 8% urban and 92% rural. Click here to go to a helpful map. But just where lies its centre?

 

Some might argue its heart is the Market. Some (few) might look at the posted coordinates and say “Yep – that’s it!” Some might point to Parliament Hill, or the Experimental Farm. Others may cite the arc-shaped City Centre complex on Champagne Avenue North. Still others of a more literal bent might reach for a map and calculator and beaver away with calculus.

 

But we’re GEOCACHERS!! We know exactly how to find the centre of Ottawa.

 

Unfortunately, after you figure out its exact location, you’ll discover you can’t quite get there. However, you can get close enough to both savour the ambience of this epicentric locale and notice a large utilitarian structure about 590 meters to the east (100 degrees true). Further scrutiny will reveal a small white sign with a black number on it located about 50 meters northeast from the midpoint of the structure. Call this number “NUMBER.”

 

The cache is awaiting you 260 X NUMBER meters from the centre of Ottawa along a bearing of 24.63 X NUMBER degrees true.

 

When launched, the cache contained a caching manifesto, log and pen, Telus cell phone (it works!), heart pendant Brian’s dad made for his mom from an airplane windshield, “Our Manotick” pin, talking Puss ‘n Boots (Shrek) figurine, motorcycle, garlic peeler (it works!), blank copper waypoint tag and wire, French diabetes Travel Bug (that wants to go back to Paris) AND ….a gorgeous Bluelamb geocoin!
